Last weekend our friends from Na Seamróga, all the way from Tullamore in County Offaly travelled up to play in the 2015 All Ireland Féile Na nGael. On Saturday evening one of the Na Seamróga management team recited this fantastic poem:
Muintir an Chreagáin Abú.
Hi there everyone/In Kickhams Creggan GAC
You've bent over backways to welcome us / - Na Seamróga from Offaly.
We heard we were headin' for Creggan /
Well it might as well have been The Isle of Wight /
But soon we were trawling your / Most informative website.
'Tis near Randalstown / On the shores of the Great Lough Neagh /
And Tony McCollum is king o' the place / We found on that first day.
You were old hands at the hosting lark / Hosting at least twice /
And we kept in constant contact / With the main man, Joseph Rice.
Whitehill are deadly rivals / And Ye have St Olcan's Well /
And the Cregganbury Music Festival / Is big here you can tell.
Watty Grahams won your Under 21 Tournament / Early in the spring
But when it comes to the end of June / The Summer Barbecue is the thing.
'Tis around the same time / As Féile Naomh Olcáin
Alas the other Féile'll be over / And us Shamrocks will be gone.
Your informal workshop on 'Mindfulness' / Also looks impressive
And if we could only have stayed another week / We'd have left with more mindfulness and not with considerably less off.
You've a fundamental coaching course / That every club should do
And your great array of pictures / Were liked by Henry Hughes.
When our neighbours won the Leinster Junior / But lost to Fullan Gaels, it was bizarre
Twas a crowd called Creggan Kickhams / Won that All-Ireland in Mullingar.
The more we heard, the more we liked / To come to Creggan we were itchin'
Knowing Alison McNally and Agnes McEldowney / Would be cooking in the kitchen.
We're learning 'bout your history / Ever since we came up here
God ye have a great Cultural Officer / In Paddy McAteer.
We love your townlands item, Paddy / An Grianán, Liatrom, Creeve
That Achcdh a' Locháin and Raithneachán are history / Many must surely grieve.
We haven't many McConvilles / McLarnons or McIlroys
But we've old churches just like Cranfield / Similar in shape and size.
McAuleys, Batesons, Tottens, Denvirs / Are thin on the ground too
To us Dougan, Morgan, Devlin, Marrion / Are names that are pretty new.
And mothers and others can play footie / As your Youtube snippets prove
And the women of Cois Locha / Can really get into the singing groove.
So we salute your vibrant community / And all the things you do
And we'll still be reminiscing about Creggan / In the year 2032.
