The Thomas McCann Plasterers South West Feile na nGael Final
Kickham’s Creggan 1-07
All Saints, Ballymena 0-03
Kickham’s Creggan retained the South West Feile na Gael title at St Mary’s Ahoghill on Sunday and in doing so have now won the trophy for ten consecutive years. However, All Saints Ballymena made them work for it all the way.
Having won the toss, Kickham’s chose to play against the strong first half breeze. It was Kickham’s who drew first blood when Liam “The Mighty” Quinn stole in behind the All Saints defence to coolly stroke home a real poachers goal. All Saints came back strongly and by half time had the game level with three well taken points.
After the restart and turning with their backs to the wind, Kickham’s started to turn the screw. Three Dermot Carey frees put the Kickham’s lads three up. The pivotal moment in the match came midway through the second half. After being camped in their own half, All Saints broke down the field only to see a marvellous strike superbly stopped by the brilliant Kickham’s goalie, Eamon Og McAllister. The resulting rebound fell kindly to the Ballymena men and for the second time the sliotar was struck like a bullet, only to be brilliantly stopped and cleared by the tenacious wing half back Eunan McAteer.
Having survived this scare Kickham’s rallied with further points from Dermot Carey, Tiarnan McAteer and a sublime effort from far out on the wing from centre half back Kealan McCann. The ever vigilant Kickham’s full back Jamie McCann had a super game throughout while Liam McCann, who wasn’t at full strength due to a tummy bug, worked tirelessly at midfield. Eamon Og McAllister in goals was the Creggan saviour pulling off a number of top drawer saves throughout the game.
All Saints had fine performances from Eoin McGuigan, Padhraig Magill, Cormac Magill, Calum McGarry, Eamon Elliott, Ryan McGarry, Sean O’Rawe, Sam Riley, Patrick O’Hara and Alex O’Boyle.
This was another great team performance from the U14 hurlers of Kickham’s who now go straight into the All County Feile na nGael ‘B’ final. Their opposition will be either the North Antrim or South Antrim ‘B’ Champions who have yet to meet in the All County semi final.
