All County Minor Football Championship
Round 1
20 July 2010
Kickhams Creggan 0-13
Cargin 1-04
Creggan Minor Footballers have won the All County Championship for the past two years and were keen to get their defence of the trophy off to a good start against rivals Cargin at Páirc Ciceam on Tuesday evening.
With a number of players available from the SW League semi-final defeat against the same opponents a number of weeks ago, the mood in the camp was that the result would be a whole lot different to that game....and so it turned out. With Matthew Nelson back from suspension and Conor McCann making his first start of the season, which was great to see, the timing could not have been more perfect!
Young McCann wasted no time in getting in to the groove as he slotted over Creggan's first point in the opening minute to set the tone for the evening. Kickham's dominated midfield with the pairing of Oran McCann and Aidan McKeown, which set the springboard for much of the attacking play heading in the direction of the visitors goals.
At the half time whistle Creggan were comfortable at 0-08 to 0-02.
The second half saw Cargin come more in to the game, as you would expect in a Championship encounter, but they could never close the gap to more than 3 points at any time. Both sides were guilty of missing gilt edge goal chances which if either had of gone in would have made the game interesting.
In the end Creggan ran out winners by 6 points and now meet Glenavy in the Quarter Final who will pose another tough test for our lads.
