ACHL Div. 4 Roundup
Monday, May 10, 2010
Creggan hurlers have now played 3 games in
their Antrim league campaign. To date due to injuries and non
availability of key players from last season it has been difficult to
see light at the end of the tunnel but things are on the up!!
Creggan went down to a disappointing defeat
in their opening match of the season in a tough uncompromising
encounter with Davitts at Boucher Road. The match started off evenly
with Creggan taking the lead via some Tommy McCan frees. Davitts hit
back with a few scores of their own to level and then a scrappy goal
gave them the lead. The match was overshadowed by a sending off just
before half time. In a sickening off the ball challenge, a Davitts
player pulled across Paddy McLarnon’s head. There is no place for that
type of behaviour in our games and he was rightly sent off and should
get a lengthy suspension. Paddy was substituted but thankfully his
injury was not serious and could have been much worse.
The second half was nip and tuck, Davitts
started off better with a few well taken frees. However Creggan improved
driven forward by Oran McCann in particular who was excelling as the
extra man. A scrappy goal gave Creggan some hope but unfortunately time
was against us and davitts ran out winners by 2 points, 1-09 to 1-07.
The second game of the campaign was a home
match to Larne. This proved to be a straightforward victory for Creggan
who cantered to a 4-20 to 1-03 victory. The highlights of this game
included sound 1st half defensive display from Niall Robb, Paddy
McLarnon and Oran McCann, whilst Tommy McCann, Conal McLarnon and
Tiarnan McLarnon impressed in attack. A tremendous point from Oliver
Duffin !! proved the highlight of the second half as Creggan ran out
easy winners.
Creggan’s third game of the campaign was a
visit to Ballela in Co Down. Ballela play in Division 1 in Down and were
unbeaten going into this game so this was a key game for the promotion
hopes of the Creggan boys. The long journey down was made with only 16
players as more injuries took their toll on the already depleted squad.
The first half started with some good
attacking play from Sam Maguire and Tommy who took some fantastic points
from long range. However Ballela soon got on top and two goals before
half time threatened to derail Creggan’s hopes. The Ballela Full forward
who was an ex Down County player was causing problems for Niall and Co
in defence and Ballela went in ahead by 3 points at half time.
Creggan started the second half on the
front foot led by excellent performance from Aidan Maguire at wing back
and Sam and Benny in midfield they fought back to level scores quickly.
James Dougan had moved to full forward due to injury and this proved to
work in our favour as a speculative shot decieved the Ballela goalie and
bounced into the net. This proved to be the decisive score in the game
which was played at a good pace with some good tough but fair hurling
from both sides. Creggan had a few scares late on with some good
defending from Aidan Maguire in particular and two good saves from
Stevie in goals.
The two point win puts Creggan right back
in the hunt for promotion again. Credit must go to the players that have
put in the effort to see out this tough start to the season. More
effort and higher attendance at training is required to succeed but we
must go on the hope that with the players that are to return later in
the season that this can be a successful campaign.
