ACFL Div. 1
02 May 2009
St. Johns 2-10
Kickhams Creggan 1-07
Played
in excellent conditions St Johns enjoyed their first league win of the
season. They started very brightly and with a very lively full forward
line took a 2 point lead after 5 minutes of play. Creggan after
coming to terms with St Johns early pace settled and started building some nice movements of play
resulting in scores from Leigh Martin and Dermot McCann. St Johns finished
the half stronger and with accurate free taking and some long range efforts
found themselves 3 up at the break.
HALF
TIME SCORE - 0-08 to 0-05.
Second
half and with St Johns playing into the scoring end started again the brighter
side and scored an early free and penalty to leave 7 points in the game with 25
minutes remaining. A leg injury to Leigh Martin and Tony close meant we
had to make changes and the threat of a comeback looked unlikely. We
continued to attack but St Johns got back in numbers and defended very
well. Against the run of play St Johns got another goal, this time a
fine effort from 13 yeards into the top corner with Peter Graham unlucky as he
dived well and got finger tips onto it. Two frees from Peter McCollum and a
well placed penalty by Mark Anthony after good work by Oliver Duffin finished
the scoring.
