U21 Football Championship
20 April 2009
Aghagallon 1-07
Kickhams Creggan 2-13
Creggan eased their
way through the preliminary round of the All County U21 Championship against
Aghagallon on Monday evening.
Nine out of the
starting fifteen for Creggan finished the Minor Championship Final last season
so this is an extremely young side and have many years left to play at this
level.
From the throw-in
Creggan raced in to a five point lead through scores from Marty, Cathal, Conor
and a brace from Leigh. On the downside though, big Paddy McAuley had to come
off with a back spasm to be replaced by Seamus Allen.
Aghagallon gained
some dominance of midfield for a while and they used this as a platform to post
three points in a row to make a game of it. Tommy McCann made a break from the
half back line to put the finishing touches to a fine move to get himself on
the score sheet and turn the tide back in Creggan’s favour.
As the half time
whistle approached Sam Maguire put the ball to the net after a break through
defence run from Odhran McLarnon resulted in the keeper parrying, but Sam was
there to register the goal.
Half Time:
Aghagallon 0-05, Kickhams Creggan 1-06
The second period
was in the main dominated by Creggan but it wasn’t until they were behind on
the score board did they roll their sleeves up and wrestle the game back from
the home side.
St. Mary’s started
the brighter and scored 1-02 (one penalty) to take the lead for the first time,
but this was to be the end of their scoring as Creggan took control thereafter
to surge ahead. With some tenacious tackling and strong forward play Creggan
saw the game out with points coming from all over the field as Marty, Dermot,
Leigh, Odhran, Hugh and Aidan McKeown getting the scores. Leigh also fisted to
the net after some great interchanging forward play to leave Creggan
comfortable winners on the night.
Creggan are now in
the first round proper and will travel to the winners of St. Enda’s Vs Rossa.
