Creggan U16s gained a measure of revenge for their defeat in the Breslin Cup final at the hands of Dunloy last week. They met the same side in the semi final knockout stage of the league in Toome, and with both teams ending joint second in the table with 20 points each, this had the makings of a tight game.
Creggan got off to a flier when right from the throw in they played great attacking football and raced in to a 5pt to no score lead. Martin Johnston, Conor McCann, Mark Russell, Declan McCann and Fintan Burke getting the scores. Dunloy replied briefly with a pointed free, but Kickhams hit back with another 2 points from the boots of Pierce and Tiernan.
It was all going to plan for our lads until Dunloy raced up the field and found the net to bring them back in to the game. Declan responded to this score by slotting over the bar but Dunloy hit a purple patch and dominated the game for a spell when they recorded another goal and 3 points. This put them in charge of the game but Sean got the final score of the half to leave it a one point game.
HT – Kickhams 0-09, Dunloy 2-04
Just like the start of the first half, Creggan took back control of the match straight away by shooting a salvo of 1-03. Fintan grabbed the goal and the big lads Aidan and Martin claimed the points. Dunloy shot a point in between these scores, and they added to it further by scoring another goal and a point which made the game a draw at this stage. The play was flowing end to end with scores being missed and defenders coming out on top to leave it a tense finish.
Creggan grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck just when it was needed though. Sean slotted over a point which Conor followed by converting a cracker of a sideline ball straight over the bar. Young McCann was flying now and he split the posts again before Cillian Allen capped a good nights work for himself when he claimed a point of his own. It was left to Fintan to put the game beyond doubt by getting the final point and Creggan were safely through to the League Final.
It was great for the young lads to finally beat Dunloy when it really mattered and now their reward is a League Final spot against the winners of Cargin and Rasharkin. Congratulations and well done....bring it home to Creggan!
